Pepper's Newsletter May 7, 2019

Good morning!  Here we are again, Tuesday morning, and that can mean only one thing: another newsletter chock full of info regarding new items and current events about all things Pepper's Foods! You may have celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Sunday which, according to Wikipedia, is an annual celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. More popularly celebrated in the United States than Mexico, the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. It's a significant event because the Mexican army was outnumbered two to one and less well equipped than their French adversaries but alas, a year later, they were defeated at Puebla anyway when the French returned in greater numbers.

So there you go. If you didn't know why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated, you do now! And if you celebrated, here's hoping you had a great time because in Victoria it was muy hermoso!

This week's newsletter is brimming with products that you're definitely going to want to know about so let's just go for it and get 'er done!

If you've been into the store anytime after April 28th, you'll no doubt have noticed a new addition to our front end to better serve our many loyal customers: another express till! We knew how frustrating it could be when we were hopping busy and our cashiers were feversihly trying to get everyone through as quickly as possible. So with this extra till, we're hoping to alleviate the congestion at the front of the store and reduce the time you sometimes have to wait in line!

Two weeks ago we told you that our frozen novelty freezer would be showing up soon and guess what...? It has! And just in time for the gorgeous, warm weather we have in our forcast! So if you have plans to head down to Gyro Park, make sure to come in and grab one or two yummy treats from the freezer and go!

Speaking of yummy treats, we have numerous chocolate ones to tell you about. Starting things off are some from the Ritter Sport Cacao Selection series with cocoa mass from three different regions. There's Dark Milk Chocolate offering a smooth chocolate knoshing experience with a 55% cocoa mass from Ghana. Next there's the Dark Chocolate, a fine chocolate tasting bar with a 61% cocoa mass from Nicaragua and finally, there's the Intense Dark Chocolate with a cocoa mass of 74% from Peru. This is Quality. Chocolate. Squared.

If buying local and saving wildlife is more your thing, you're going to want to try two new flavours of chocolate from Denman Island Chocolate! New Dark Chocolate Grizzly Bar is deliciously rich, fairly traded and organic 63% cocoa mass dark chocolate and each bar sold helps end trophy hunting in the territories of Coastal First Nations! And as if that wasn't cool enough, you can purchase an Orca Coconut Dark Chocolate Bar! As taken from the Georgia Strait Alliance website: This fundraiser bar will benefit Georgia Strait Alliance’s Orcas Can’t Wait campaign to protect the endangered Southern Resident orca population. Denman Island Chocolate will donate $5 for every case of 24 bars sold. The Orca Coconut bars will be on offer permanently because this iconic orca population will need help for many years to come. #orcascantwait georgiastrait.org

And continuing with organic, fairly traded chocolate is Prana Organic Inca Trail Chocolate Bark containing cranberries, nuts and seeds. Dark chocolate of 62% cocoa mass combined with wholesome and healthy ingredients makes for a perfect snack anytime!

Eugene's Greek Food has been serving up delicious, well, Greek food to Victorians since 1979 and Pepper's is proud to announce that for the month of May, every container sold of Eugene's Homous and Tzatziki will result in Eugene's donating 25 cents to the B.C. Cancer Foundation Vancouver Island! By supporting local you help small business and you help search for a cure!

Another local company with something new is Terra Breads (Vancouver, BC) with Pure Crunch Granola. Made in small batches and free of preservatives, this granola contains honey roasted oat and clusters and toasted sesame and sunflower seeds to create a pure and simple granola!

The people at Christie continue to churn out limited edition Oreos at a frenetic pace, don't they? Here's another one that may cause a bit more eyebrow raising than some of the others offered recently: Game of Thrones Oreo Cookies. It's the classic Oreo sandwich cookie except that there are four different logos related to the hit HBO show: White Walkers, House LannisterHouse Targaryen and House Stark. People are nuts for all things Game of Thrones so if that's you, get on down here and get yourself a bag or two before the next episode airs!

Waterbridge Cookie Barrel Assorted Cream Biscuits might not sound as cool as the cookies we just mentioned but they are every bit as delicious! Perfect for dunking and dipping, these Custard Cream and Bourbon Cream biscuits will terminate your cookie craving with extreme prejudice.

Nothing goes better with cookies than a glass of fresh milk. So if you're looking for something to take with you on the go then new Natrel Fine Filtered Lactose Free 2% Milk (and soon to be on the shelf Natrel Fine Filtered Lactose Free Chocolate Milk) in a convenient 310 ml bottle will suit your needs perfectly. This milk is an excellent source of protein and it's just as enjoyable for those who aren't lactose intolerant!

And finally, we have Kiju Organic Lemonade and Kiju Organic Mango Orange Juice in a 1 litre tetra carton! These, in addition to the Kiju Organic Pomegranate Cherry Juice that we already stocked, are 100% certified organic fruit juices from concentrate. And just so you know, it's pronounced kee-joo.

Don't forget to sign the back of your receipt and stuff it in the box for your chance to win the authentic Toronto Maple Leafs jersey hanging up at the front of the store! This highly coveted garment will go to one lucky winner but you can enter as many receipts as you like!

Ok gang, thanks for taking the time to read up on what's new and exciting at your local neighbourhood grocery store. Please have a look at the attached flyer and take good care until next week!
